Landscaping Policy Relevant Research in Pakistan and Understanding its Political Economy Dynamics

Commissioned by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID-UK), this project was aimed at:
  1. Mapping research institutions in Pakistan that are engaged in policy research relevant to Economics, Nutrition, Health, social policy, Governance, Peace & conflict, Evaluation and Education. Papers based on the first part of project, provides a broad overview of the institutions engaged in policy research in the country, their thematic priorities, geographic concentration and sources of funding available to them
  2. Analysis of the political economy of policy relevant research in the country to understand the possibilities and constraints facing the commissioning, undertaking and uptake of research in Pakistan. The study highlights weak links between research and policy making, poor social science base, informal practices in commissioning of policy research, and a wide range of barriers faced by those conducting policy research. It also evaluates, critically, the role of international donors in the overall landscape of policy research. The study also finds opportunities offered by the changing institutional context for strengthening research institutions and the uptake of research into policies and practices
